The problem with $10 million homes is that people who buy them can afford to build their own $10 million homes. Because of that, they are worth less than people think.

One of the things I’ve seen with current junior staff is that they have grown up with computer text for everything, which makes reading non-OCR text very difficult and a learned skill for them. Since I work in a field with scanned handwritten documents, this makes their work much slower.

For a company like Valve, they are going to need greater adoption than what F-Droid has to be viable.

And I didn’t say that a successful app store was impossible, just improbable enough that it doesn’t justify investing in Android and that previous failures show how hard this is. Valve is still a for profit company and will make decisions to make money.

This is more of a case where capitalism decays into fascism.

Capitalism relies on a decent legal framework to function. It doesn’t have to be equal, but it has to be consistent. It is usually why a lot of nations defined by capitalism are generally not dictatorships; monied interests are given ways to influence policy.

Fascism concentrates power and frees that power from restraint in order to benefit a part of society. The ability for a person to imprison anyone without legal checks is an extraordinary power.

F-Droid’s market share is a rounding error compared to Google’s. Just because another app store exists doesn’t mean there is significant competition between app stores.

Valve didn’t expand Steam into Linux to gain market share in a new market, Valve did it because it is a hedge in case Windows becomes toxic to Steam. There is now a fallback position if Steam is locked out of Windows, and I expect Valve to continue to build in this position.

As for Android, there isn’t a successful second app store that isn’t tied to hardware; even Amazon quit Android. I don’t think Valve sees Android expansion as commercialy viable.

It is more of a way to sidestep the judicial process. The executive branch can act faster than the judicial branch in removing someone from the country before appeals. Once the person is in a foreign country, they are no longer in custody of someone under the control of American judges.

It isn’t a cost saving measure, it is a legal loophole.
